Lalune — Premium Bedding 100% TENCEL™

Everything you need to know about TENCEL™

The fibre redefining what bedding comfort can feel like

At Lalune, we made a simple and radical choice: to use TENCEL™ Lyocell exclusively across our entire collection. Not because it's trending — because the facts speak for themselves. Here's what guided our decision.

What is TENCEL™ Lyocell?

TENCEL™ is a registered trademark of Lenzing AG, an Austrian company founded in 1938. It refers to a cellulosic fibre produced from wood pulp — primarily eucalyptus, beech, and spruce — sourced from sustainably managed, FSC- or PEFC-certified forests.

It is neither a synthetic fibre nor ordinary cotton. It is a regenerated cellulosic fibre: natural in origin, transformed through an advanced chemical process called the closed-loop process. This process dissolves wood pulp in a non-toxic organic solvent (amine oxide), then regenerates it into fibre. More than 99.8% of the solvent is recovered and fed back into the loop — resulting in near-zero waste production.

360,000 tonnes produced globally per year (2023)
−50% carbon emissions vs generic lyocell

Moisture management: a unique nanofibrillar architecture

TENCEL™ Lyocell's internal structure is made up of millions of hydrophilic nanofibrils — 500 times finer than a human hair. These micro-channels actively regulate the absorption and release of moisture in two stages.

First, they capture the water vapour released by the body. Then, they transport it to the outer surface of the fibre for evaporation. The result: the surface of the fabric stays dry to the touch, even during intense perspiration. TENCEL™ absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton — and dries three times faster than wool.

TENCEL™ doesn't just absorb perspiration — it actively evacuates it, keeping your sleep surface consistently fresh.

This moisture management creates a microenvironment that is unfavourable to odour-causing bacteria. Studies have shown a significantly lower bacterial growth rate on TENCEL™ compared to cotton or polyester under moderate humidity conditions — with no chemical additives whatsoever.

🌡

Thermoregulation: 50% more breathable than cotton

TENCEL™ Lyocell has a higher thermal conductivity than cotton. In practical terms, the fibre dissipates body heat more efficiently, delivering an immediate sensation of freshness on contact with the skin. Lenzing AG states that TENCEL™ is 50% more breathable than cotton.

Unlike cotton — which retains moisture and can become heavy and clammy in intense heat — TENCEL™ maintains a constant thermal exchange between the body and the fabric. The result is a stable microenvironment throughout the night, in both summer and winter.

Softness: silk-like feel, without the silk price tag

The surface of TENCEL™ fibres is smooth and rounded, with no microscopic roughness. This surface profile reduces friction against the skin, producing a silky, gentle sensation that users often describe as close to silk — at a fraction of its cost.

Unlike synthetic fibres that can cause irritation or trap heat, and unlike linen which can feel rough at first, TENCEL™ is soft from the very first contact. Its natural cellulosic structure also makes it well-suited to sensitive and reactive skin types.

The fabric also retains a subtle natural sheen, giving bedding that premium look found in luxury hotels — without any artificial surface treatment.

Longevity: stronger than cotton, wash after wash

TENCEL™ Lyocell has high tenacity among cellulosic fibres. It resists pilling and abrasion better than ordinary cotton, and maintains its shape and size after washing — whereas cotton can shrink with every cycle.

A study evaluating 150 users over 90 days showed that lyocell textiles maintained wrinkle resistance 40% better than cotton equivalents. Its strength is preserved even when wet — a rare property among natural fibres.

  • Superior shrink resistance compared to cotton
  • Superior pilling resistance compared to cotton
  • Shape and colour retention after repeated washes
  • Strength preserved when wet
  • Less prone to creasing than cotton or sateen

Origin & footprint: a fibre that respects the planet

The trees used to produce TENCEL™ — primarily eucalyptus — grow rapidly, without intensive irrigation, and on marginal land unsuitable for food production. Their short growth cycle supports renewability without placing pressure on ecosystems.

Compared to conventional cotton — one of the most water- and pesticide-intensive crops in the world — TENCEL™ uses significantly less water at every stage of production. And at end-of-life, TENCEL™ fibre is biodegradable and compostable under industrial, soil, and marine conditions, as certified by Belgian certification body Vinçotte.

Why Lalune chooses TENCEL™ exclusively

Because the finest bedding makes no compromise between comfort and conscience. TENCEL™ is not just another material — it is the best possible choice for softer nights and a more responsible future.
